This workshop provides everything you need to explore the art of hand developing your C-41 colour negative film.

You receive a roll of 35mm film to shoot at your own pace before returning to our community darkroom where our experienced staff will guide you through the entire film development process.

At the end of the workshop, you'll not only leave with newfound skills, collection of developed negatives and high-res scans, but also with a deeper appreciation for the art and heritage of colour film photography.

Roll of film included

We send out a 36-exposure roll of Kodak Gold 200 for you to shoot before your workshop date, so you arrive with a full roll ready to develop. It’s a 35mm film that works in any standard 35mm camera. On the day, all chemistry and consumables are provided, so everything you need is included.

  • 1. Receive your film and shoot at your own pace

Everything’s included, so there’s nothing to buy and nothing to figure out. When you book, you choose the developing session date that suits you. We then post your roll of colour film out to you, and once it arrives you can shoot it in your own time before the session. Giving it as a gift? The recipient picks their own session date using the gift certificate, whenever they’re ready.

  • 2. Develop your film, by hand, in the darkroom

Guided every step of the way, you’ll develop your own roll from start to finish: loading the film into a developing tank, mixing the chemistry, and running the full C-41 process with the darkroom’s equipment. It’s hands-on and easy to follow, and by the end you’ll genuinely understand what’s happening, not just how to copy it. Learn it once and you can keep developing your own film at home, saving a good chunk on lab costs over time.

  • 3. Review your images

This is the technical part: scanning your developed negatives to see your images as finished positives for the first time. You’ll use our professional-grade scanning equipment to draw the best out of every frame, and we’ll talk through what’s happening as you go. We can also cover other scanning techniques that work well at home, so you can keep digitising your own film later. Your finished images are sent over by transfer link after the workshop.

Each workshop covers a specific darkroom technique, so you can learn one process at a time and build your skills as you go. Book more than one workshop and 20% off is applied automatically at checkout.
