This workshop provides everything you need to explore the art of hand developing your black & white film.
You receive a roll of 35mm film to shoot at your own pace before returning to our community darkroom where our experienced staff will guide you through the entire film development process.
At the end of the workshop, you'll not only leave with newfound skills, collection of developed negatives and high-res scans, but also with a deeper appreciation for the art and heritage of black & white film photography.
Roll of film included
We send out a roll of film to shoot before your workshop date, and all chemistry and consumables are provided during the workshop.
The process, step by step
-
1. Receive your film and shoot at your own pace
You’ll receive a roll of film to use in your own time. Take it out into the world, experiment, and create images without rushing toward a deadline. Once your film is finished, you’ll book a developing session that fits your schedule and bring your exposed roll into the darkroom.
-
2. Develop your film, by hand, in the darkroom
In the darkroom, you’ll develop your film from start to finish with guidance at every step. You’ll load the film in complete darkness, mix and use chemistry, and use professional-grade equipment. The focus is on understanding what’s happening, not just following instructions.
-
3. Scan and view your finished images
After developing, you’ll scan your negatives and see your images as final positives for the first time. We’ll look at how exposure and development choices show up in the finished files, and how to prepare your scans for sharing, archiving, or printing later on.
